Prints and Drawings from my RESIDENCY 2012

The Venice Printmaking Studio has given me the most fantastic exposure to European culture. My whole concept for this residency revolved around becoming a part of society and to embrace as much of that culture as I possibly could. With this in mind, I feel my mission has been extremely successful and that I truly got a sense of Venetian lifestyle.

As I started my research in Venice and Murano, I began sketching everything, from things that I found inspiring to architecture, costumes and designs. I felt that by sketching ideas even if it was only a 30 second sketch, my aim was to capture an idea. I wanted to capture a moment and the emotions I felt whilst engaging with that specific object or idea.

These prints and drawings are not perfect images but are rather a collection of ideas from this trip to Europe. From these sketches, I feel much clearer about my concept and the direction I want to take with my artworks. I now know that I want to pursue more expressive and emotive qualities in my image, breaking the boundaries and rules in traditional intaglio.
